As a group worker, I am very open-minded. To me, being open-minded means that you are able to listen to everyone’s ideas and take them into consideration, even if they are crazy. An example of me doing this is when we were in our groups and trying to throw a poster together, and I listened to everyone’s ideas, and even thought we didn’t have a lot of time, we used the craziest idea, and it turned out very cool. I also think that I am a very good creative thinker. To be, this means that when I think, I am thinking outside of the box, and trying to come up with some ideas that are insane and might seem impossible, but will turn out amazing. One example of me doing this would be the time we all sat in a circle and we were thinking of ideas to make this exhibition better, and I was thinking of how we could connect something to what we learned about, and how to make it interactive, and I thought of the idea to do social experiments.
A weakness that I have in group work is adaptability. To me, this means that when I am given a task that I am not the best at, like drawing, I can adapt to that task and try my hardest. One example of this is someone asked me to draw, and before I even tried, I just said “I can’t draw” and moved on. Another thing that I have trouble with is critical thinking. Critical thinking to me is to think of both the positives and the negatives of an idea. When I am working in a group, I get really excited about an idea, and I don’t think through it to see what could go wrong so that we can avoid that. Then we get to the step in that idea where we are actually making it, and something goes wrong, something that we could have avoided. Some things that I could do to improve my challenges during this project is to not give up as soon as someone asks me to do something that I’m not good at. I can try new things and jobs that I wouldn’t usually do. When we come up with an idea, I could really think it through, and come up with some things that could go wrong, just so that we can really avoid those, and refine it so that it is even better.

What I would really like to see in this exhibition is something unique and something that has never been done before. I want to see people’s reactions to how a group of 9th graders did something this intricate. During this exhibition, I want to see people’s minds blown, and I would like to see them change their minds about taking us teens seriously and to see them try to make a change. Most of all, I would like to see this work, and to see it all come together in the end. I think that we can really make an impact if we get this to work.
When I’m talking to parents about this afterword, I would like to hear compliments about how well it was put together. I would like to also hear of what they thought about it, and I would like to see if any parents will talk about how they can make an impact on other people who don’t know about the issue of socialization. Most parents haven’t even heard of socialization, so I would like to hear something about how knowledgeable we are about it. I would love to hear a sociology professor tell me how good it was, with the information and the creativeness. I hope that we will hear the words outstanding, or fantastic, some words that make us fill with pride. They make their life about this subject, and I would like them to see how much it has impacted us and how passionate we are about it. I feel like personally, I have connected with this unit very much, and I am hoping to show everyone what I have learned. These first few weeks of the Design Thinking process for our exhibition has been very creative. That is the only word I can think of to describe it. We have been coming up with some very intricate ideas, and all of them have grown and been refined. We have been voting on what we will put into this exhibition, and have come up with the main idea of a maze. The maze will have rooms that you go through. In the beginning, you will get a sticker with something on it, like a pink or blue one, and then you will be put with a set of “parents” that will guide you through “life” and each room will be you growing up and being socialized. We will add little things in the rooms, such as videos, little social experiments, and other ideas that us freshmen came up with.
In this exhibition, we are trying to address the problem with sociology. We want people to understand that they have been socialized this way, and we want to give them some ideas of how to go the Direction for Change, which are just some little or big things you can do to change the way you think of other people. I am really excited for this exhibition, because I feel like it is very interactive, and we have all come up with really great ideas that will flow together. Some jobs I really want to do are fundraising, videography, performance, or the social experiment crew. I am very passionate about these jobs, and I am excited to see how they contribute to the exhibition. I really am very passionate about the social experiments, and I would really like to work on improving those to make them better and even more subtle. During these past two weeks of working on our prototypes has been very rewarding. My group and I have really gotten to bounce ideas off of each other and to really analyze them to make them better. We ran into a lot of bumps in the road, but what really came together were our ideas. We have them together and we have looked over them to make sure they are good. There is always room for improvement, but the more we refine, the better it gets. |
